How long does my hair have to be, to be braided? If each hair is 3 to 4 inches long it can usually be braided into what I call a classic style. Layered hairstyles are not a problem with a French technique. The thicker the hair is, the longer it needs to be though. Does it hurt to be braided? I hate to hear childhood torture stories. It is unfortunate that so many people had bad hair braiding experiences as children. I hope your hair braiding experience with me is always a pleasant one. My motto is: Fast and Painless. What is the most strands you can braid? To this I always answer with "the hair is the limit". The most I have had opportunity to braid is 21 strands, in a hat fashion, on my fellow braider in Ohio, Mary Bertke. What is the longest hair you have ever braided? About 5 & 1/2 ft. Can you do cornrows? Yes, but I don't. I do styles that can be completed in a relatively short period of time, and for a set price. See Rows for my cornrow alternative. Will you cut my hair? And: Do you need a license to do that? No! I do not alter hair, I only manipulate it. This is listed under the category of Hair Ornamentation, just like hair wraps. I do not need a license to decorate. Do you clean those combs? I disinfect my combs between each person. I also wash my hands between each person, just like your hairdresser should. What is that you are using on your hands? Hair Gel. It helps me hang onto slippery hair and it helps your braid last longer. How did you learn to do this? My mother and maternal grandmother taught me when I was a child. I also had two sisters with long hair to braid for school each day. Can you braid wet hair? I can. It is not my preference. Wet hair is harder to gather up smoothly, it breaks easier, and it takes longer to braid. Should my hair be freshly washed? It is not essential but most of my customers want to start with clean hair so they can get the most wear out of their braid. Do your hands hurt after braiding all day? Other than when I was very pregnant, I have never had so much as a cramp in my hands. I attribute this to many years of milking the family cow while growing up on the farm. Can you braid my XXX? Horse? Doll? Wig? Beard? Mustache? Bald head (about a hundred times a day)? The most unusual request: "Say, can you braid my back hair?" from a huge Viking. He was joking thank goodness. If it can be braided (or not) I have probably been asked to braid it.
